FAQs for Parents

Q. When should my child declare a major?
A. As soon as your child feels comfortable with the one he/she has in mind. For some students this may be when they are at 100%, while others might be comfortable when they are relatively sure. One advantage of declaring can be receiving priority in getting classes in the major. We encourage all students to have a declared major by no later than the completion of 60 credits.

Q. Can UST students declare any major they want?
A. That depends on the students and their qualifications/eligibility for a particular restricted major. We encourage all students to meet with their advisor regularly regarding their major choices and what possibilities are open to them based on their unique skills and abilities.

Q. What’s a “restricted” major?
A. Some Colleges have majors that you cannot just “declare.” This is also true for certain majors in Arts & Sciences. Important: a lot of majors are very competitive, so getting good grades really counts! (That even goes for 1st semester--one bad semester could mean not getting into the major of choice.) '

Q. What courses do all students have to take?
A. All UD students, regardless of major, take: ENGL 110 (known as E-110), a freshman composition class either 1st or 2nd semester, unless the student has equivalent transfer credits or is exempt; one 3 - credit multicultural course, to be taken any time before graduation; various general education requirements and skills classes; enough successful credits in the major and degree to graduate. This number can vary.

Q. Will my child be able to take courses in any major?

A. Sometimes. But sometimes certain courses are for “majors only”, and that means if your child is not currently declared in that major, he/she cannot advance register for that class and may not be able to get it during drop/add. (Another reason to declare!)

Q. Who is my child’s advisor?
A. All UST (Undeclared) students are assigned an advisor when they come for new student orientation. Your child can switch to a different advisor in the UST department at any time by calling 302-831-4555 and making a request. Once your child declares, he or she will get a new advisor in the major department. In addition, students with minors are assigned an advisor for the minor.

Q. How many credits should I encourage my child to take each semester?
A. That depends on your child. For a B.A. in Arts & Sciences you’ll need 124 credits - that’s 15-16 credits each semester. Some degrees in other Colleges are 120 credits. We strongly encourage students to realistically consider how many credits they can handle, especially their first semester as this is a time of great transition.

Q. How do I make sure my child graduates in 4 years?
A. Encourage your child to: -Meet with an advisor every semester -Ask the advisor to go over your academic progress -Ask for help- and be sure to speak up to get the help needed -Read the major’s requirements in the Catalog, always read course descriptions of all classes that he/she plans to take (you’ll find them in the back of the Catalog)

Q. Where does my child buy books?
A. Students can buy books at the University Bookstore in Perkins Student Center or order them online at http://www.udel.edu/bookstore/. Books can also be purchased from any bookstore downtown.

Q. How do students know what books to buy?
A. Students should bring a copy of their schedule with them to the bookstore where a staff member will help get the books needed for each course. ***Students may be able to get some of the books USED to cut down on the costs.

Q. How do I add $ to my child’s UD Flex Account?
A. You can - Use the self-serve Value Transfer Stations (VTS) to make a cash deposit in denominations of $5, $10, or $20; make a $25 minimum deposit by check or cash at any University Box Office, or at the Student Services Building at Cashiers or in the outside drop slot. If you would like to mail a payment, send a check made out to “University of Delaware” to the Cashiers. The address is: Cashiers 116 Student Services Building Newark, DE 19716
